Cruising in comfort: a luxury getaway afloat

Salamander Voyages: Inclusive private luxury gulet charters in the mediterranean

In desperate need of a week away? I can’t recommend a week on a gulet cruising through Turkey’s turquoise haven enough. And that’s coming from someone who suffers with extreme sea sickness - that's how good it was. There is a certain magic about the Aegean coast that can only truly be experienced by sea and a week on The Salamander was enough to make me rethink my city based lifestyle, swapping it for a life afloat.

Arrival

We should have known from the luxurious airport transfer that arrived to pick us up from Bodrum, equipped with air-con, charging plugs and that necessary bottle of ice cold water, that they were going to deliver. Bang on time, we arrived at the port where Captain Zecki came to greet us. Immediately warming to his kind and professional manner, we followed him as the crew carried our bags to our home for the week. Wow. The stunning wooden gulet was classy to the last spoon, epitomising understated luxury. It was elegant yet family-friendly enough that you weren’t constantly scanning for valuables sitting precariously on surfaces. Once we became accustomed to not lifting a single finger as the crew seamlessly provided endless banquets of delicious Turkish dishes, we quickly realised this was going to be the ultimate relaxation holiday.

Home at Sea

The double ensuite rooms were comfortable and stylish, peppered with lavish details; embroidered pillows, fresh soaps and a Salamander voyages cap - a thoughtful touch to shield us from the Mediterranean sun. The space was generous, allowing us plenty of space to settle in with ease. We soon noted that any clothes left around would be folded and tidied as the boat was constantly cleaned, creating a sense that you had stepped onto the boat for the first time, every time. Every surface used for sitting or laying on was covered with a soft towel case, cutting out the scorching burn usually accompanying lying on sun-warmed leather. It was these small details to the interior of the boat that set this experience apart from any other.

The Journey

Our days were spent cruising along the turquoise coast. Sprinkled with authentic towns, historical sites and pebbled bays which the crew would tactfully position our boat in so that no other traveller could spoil our peace. Each evening, Captain Zecki would consult with the us on the next day’s route, ensuring smooth sailing and a tailored itinerary we all felt a part of. We anchored near ancient ruins, whispering stories of civilizations past and adding depth to our journey before heading back to the boat for an afternoon of reading in the sun.

Life on Board

The boat was packed with activities to keep restless guests entertained. With enviable efficiency, the crew assembled any water sports we requested without the usual huff and puff that accompanies setting up a sailboat. Paddle boarding, sailing, waterskiing - you name it. They even acted as our personal videographers, catching the best and worst of our wakeboarding escapades. ‘Brava!’ Zecki exclaimed when we managed to stand for all of two seconds.

The ring of the bell would signal for us to flock to the dining table 4 times a day - breakfast, lunch, tea and supper along with nibbles on the front of the boat at sunset. All dietary requirements were catered for by the personal chef and every meal included so many options it was impossible not to find a dish you liked - a ‘fussitarian’s’ dream. BBQ’s were lit a few times over the course of the week, resulting in deliciously prepared sea bass and mixed kebab sizzling away off the side of the boat.

Evenings under the stars

As night fell, the boat was transformed into a floating haven of tranquility. We spent our evenings stargazing and attempting to catch a cuttlefish in the water. “Calamari, calamari!” the crew called excitedly, hopping on a rib and snatching away at the creature, hoping to add to our seafood platter…For those seeking a less active wind down, Turkish delight and drinks were served as the waves lapped gently against the hull before heading off to the perfectly air-conned cabins.

Final thoughts

This week was an invitation to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with the world in its purest form. As the days unfolded, the slower pace of life became a welcomed adjustment that was hard to leave. It was a real reminder that luxury does not solely lie in excess, but also in simplicity and comfort. The simple act of bringing over a much needed iced tea to the sun bed confirmed that this hospitality service was the key. For anyone seeking a nourishing holiday away, this is one adventure that should not be missed.
